Promoting Through YouTube Part 3: Approaches of Others

One of the very first things you will be tempted to do as you navigate YouTube is to borrow the ideas of others, and most of the time there is the opportunity to do so easily.  But it is imperative that you do not just rush into the emulation of another’s material, you really need to understand exactly where the line needs to be drawn.  If you do not do this then there is the chance of infringement or worse, which can really cause some issues going forward.  There is a very fine line between borrowing and infringing in some cases, and drawing this line for yourself is vital.

One of the easiest ways to ensure that you are not infringing is to either critique or educate with your videos.  As long as you are doing one of these two things you can rest assured that you are going to be in the right, but if you fail to adhere to these rules you must be very careful.  Even then there will be instances in which your video is automatically flagged by YouTube, and in these instances it is important to stand up for yourself if necessary.  There will be the chance to let YouTube know that you believe they were mistaken in taking down your video, and if they were they will allow you to put it back up again.

Fair use is a term you will become accustomed with very quickly if you are borrowing music or video, so it is necessary that you do not use it unless absolutely necessary.  Having your own music and video content will keep you out of the crosshairs of Yahoo, and it is important to note that you can still borrow the ideas of others.  For instance if you notice that a particular product review is really popular than you can do one of your own.  There is no harm in doing the same theme or idea someone else is, but only if you are putting your own spin on things.  Staying conscious of the style of others will go a very long way in keeping you popular with both viewers and YouTube.

This sort of precaution can be taken pretty easily, so do not hesitate to stay up to date on what your viewers think.  Look closely at comments both on your Channel and on your videos to make sure that you are meeting their needs.  In time it should be obvious as to whether or not you are going to be able to get your audience involved in the conversation.  Much of the time this is going to mean asking meaningful questions that people want to answer, just make sure that you are featuring their answers on your video.  Giving credit to viewers is one of the many ways in which you can encourage viewer participation.
